Welcome back to our blog! Today we are checking out Halifax’s iconic and historic Point Pleasant Park! Point Pleasant Park is a sprawling and mainly forested municipal park located at the southern tip of the Halifax peninsula, this urban oasis holds a special place in the history of this vibrant city. In fact, its roots extend all the way back to the 17th century, when it was the site of the St. Aspinquid's Chapel. This historic chapel, now a stone amphitheater, served as the final resting place for many notable figures and witnessed the Battle of 1760 during the French and Indian War.
The park itself tells the stories of seven fortifications built in the 18th century: Cambridge Battery, Prince of Wales Tower, Fort Ogilvie, Northwest Arm Battery, Point Pleasant Battery, Chain Battery, and Chain Rock. Constructed with stone, earth, and logs, these fortifications were equipped with furnaces and fireplaces, making them vital defenses.
The park's history also encompasses its role during World War I, when the Cambridge fortification was abandoned. FUN FACT! Did you know that the British Government owns the park? Halifax rents the site from the British Government for 1 shilling (about 10 cents) a year, with a 999-year lease. Talk about cheap rent!
The park is administered by the Department of Canadian Heritage, with the Halifax Regional Municipality holding a lease since 1866, a lease secured by Sir William Young, a prominent Canadian jurist and politician.
Natural Beauty Abounds
Beyond its historical significance, Point Pleasant Park boasts 39 kilometers of winding trails and wide paths, crisscrossing 75 hectares of woodland. It's a nature lover's paradise, with over 12 varieties of trees, including apple, white birch, red maple, sugar maple, mountain ash, pin cherry, white pine, and red pine. The park is also home to a profusion of wildflowers, ferns, and shrubs, creating a vibrant ecosystem within the heart of Halifax.
One of the park's poignant features is the Halifax Memorial, a solemn tribute to the brave men and women who served during both World Wars and were lost at sea. This memorial stands as a reminder of their sacrifice and dedication.
Personal Connection to History
In the midst of this historic landscape, the anchor from the HMCS Bonaventure stands proudly. This aircraft carrier was a significant part of Canada's military history, serving as a symbol of national pride. As a little girl, my father served on the HMCS Bonaventure, the only aircraft carrier in the Canadian military at the time. The Halifax Memorial, with the anchor as its centerpiece, honors the service men and women who tragically lost their lives while serving in the military during peacetime. It's a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made for our country's defense.
Intriguing Tidbits of History
And for those who love a bit of trivia, here's a fascinating fact about the area: Edward Jordan, the first pirate executed in Canada, met his fate on November 23rd, 1809, on Black Rock Beach. A Nova Scotia law at the time required that pirates be executed with their bodies displayed in public as a stark warning to other sailors. Jordan's entire body was placed in an iron cage known as a gibbet, which was erected on the Rock Oak cropping next to the beach. It remained there for many months, serving as a chilling deterrent for would-be pirates heading to Halifax.

The southern end of Halifax offers a diverse mix of waterfront properties, modern homes, and historic estates, making it a sought-after area to call home.
